Oh fer cripes sakes.
Art's not online for five hours and...

I am ranting. Feel free to just skip ahead to the drawing at the end.

I get it. I would love a straight Young Justice cartoon version. But with names all tied up in existing TV franchises, a straight, true-to-the-original-comic ain't gonna happen. Even without copyright, YJ is full of absurd puns ("I am Mighty Endowed!" "What's her power?" "She... She has huge tracts of land!") and is more than a little dated ("Hanson Bites!"). I love it, but I know they have to update it for new audiences, heck, they have to update it for TV audiences.
The irrational hate for a series that only has a promo poster thus far because it is not an exact carbon copy of the original enrages me to no end. It's generally accepted that the animated universe is completely separate from the comics universe. They are different. Enjoy each for what it is.

I love Bart. I make no secret of the fact that he is my absolute favorite superhero. The rest of the Young Justice team usually follows close behind. And much as I love Bart, the Bart-fanbase annoys the shit out of me. I get along great with Flash fans, but the Bart-fans... *throttles*

Yes, he was fun as Impulse. He was not "completely ruined" or thrown "out of character" when he became Kid Flash. Get the hell over that. I like Bart as KF. I like Bart as Impulse. I like the idea of Bart as Flash, although the execution lacked a bit in expressing what I felt was at the core of the character. I still happily brag that Bart was the strongest speedster in the DCU until this recent nonsensical ret-con of the Speed Force originated with Barry. Two DCU speedsters, speedsters that run with him, pre-date Barry. So that's all manner of WTF.

I would also appreciate the yaoi fandom getting the hell away from YJ. They're kids! Why the heck are you slashing children!? CREEPERS. (I do not have a problem with yaoi or shonen-ai. There are certain ships I am quietly supportive of. But I do not get along with this crap directed at children. Pedophilia is still pedophilia, ya'll.) These yaoi fangirls tend to be the most vocal against Kid Flash!Bart. I don't even understand that. He's older more mature, and evidently no longer as slash-able because he shows canon interest in girls? Which would require you to ignore his canon crushes on Carol and Rose from his Impulse days. Whatevs.
I don't "ship" superheroes. I read stories about heroes and epic camaraderie. STEP OFF.

The only thing I share with the raging hate going about, is a very mild concern about the identities of two of the heroes. I wonder if the green-outfitted, blonde-haired gal is meant to be a take on the original YJ's Arrowette or a version of the Amazon, Artemis. And then I wonder if the green-eyed and red-haired Kid Flash is supposed to be Bart Allen or Wally West. The physical description matches Wally, the team appears to match Bart (brown hair and gold eyes).

Even if the characters aren't who I hope they are, I am STILL excited about the show, because it's GregFUCKINGWeisman, of whom I love his work.

New Manga Reader For Apple iPhone
By: Gary Johnson | April 22, 2010
Filed under: Apps, iPad, iPhone, iPod Apps

Fans of manga who own an iPhone or iPod Touch can now get easy access to their beloved Japanese comic book stories. Manga Rock 1.0 gives users the chance to read their favorite manga stories wherever they want to using their mobile device.

Released by Not A Basement Studio, the app lets fans to choose from over 900 different titles available at Onemanga.com, these can be read online or downloaded to enjoy at a later time. The stories can be viewed in landscape or portrait mode, with Zoom and Skim, and Screen lock.

Users can keep a track of their reading history by creating their own personal manga library that has organizing tools such as Recent and favorites. Manga fans can share their experience by telling friends what they have been reading via email and Facebook from within the app itself.

Manga Rock 1.0 is on the App Store as a free download with an in-app purchase of $1.99. iPhone/iPod Touch required with OS 3.0 or later.

This is an app you have to pay money to get. To access illegal manga scans. On a website that is free-access.
There are so many things wrong with this picture.

With all the perfectly legitimate applications and software languages that Apple blocks, THIS is the kind of app that gets through the system?!

I'm tempted to post this to fandom elite.

A few of you might recall me making this post a few months ago.

It's Young Justice!
Not 'Justice'! It's 'just us'. Adults never listen.

Okay. For serious. Rumor mill hit the streets a few months ago when Arrowette & Aqualad's designs were accidentally leaked by voice-acting candidates. Today, the announcement was officially made by CN and DC. Cartoon Network will be having a Young Justice cartoon.

Young Justice Poster: (Left to Right) Artemis, Robin, Kid Flash, Superboy, Miss Martian, and Aqualad
"Young Justice" © Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc.
"Young Justice" and all related characters and elements are trademarks of and © DC Comics
(The larger version of this image is available at either of the linked announcement websites.)

Cartoon Network provided the following description of the series:
"Young Justice: In Young Justice, being a teenager means proving yourself over and over—to peers, parents, teachers, mentors and, ultimately, to yourself. But what if you're not just a normal teenager? What if you're a teenage super hero? Are you ready to join the ranks of the great heroes and prove you're worthy of the Justice League? That's exactly what the members of Young Justice—Robin, Aqualad, Kid Flash, Superboy, Miss Martian and Artemis—will find out: whether they have what it takes to be a proven hero?

This all-new series is produced by Warner Bros. Animation and based upon characters from DC Comics. Sam Register (Teen Titans, Ben 10, Batman: The Brave and the Bold) is the executive producer. Brandon Vietti (Batman: Under the Red Hood, Superman Doomsday, The Batman) and Greg Weisman (Gargoyles, The Spectacular Spider-Man, W.I.T.C.H.) are the producers.
" [Edited for better readability by s8.org/Greg W.]

NOW. As long as that red-haired and green-eyed Kid Flash is Bart Allen combined with lack of research, I'll be a happy camper.

Until proven otherwise, I will believe:
1. That Robin is Tim Drake. That is Tim's color scheme, and no other Robin would chill with Kon-El.
2. Artemis is a re-name of Arrowette, a.k.a. Cissie King-Jones.

An update from Greg W. himself (the man who gives me confidence the show will kick ass) via Ask Greg on s8.org:

" We're hard at work on the 26-episode first season. Got a great writing staff in place, and the designs look phenomenal. I really think the series will kick some major ass!

And that's about all I'm allowed to say right now...

Yes, I have a gallery of image macros at my disposal.

I've seen a few of my friends on here ask, "Why should I use Twitter?"

Personally, I use Twitter because it's brief, easy, accessible from my cell phone, and often results in hilarious conversations.

For Example: A common behavior one Twitter is to RT (Re-Tweet) other people's tweets to you own Twitter. This is the common way of spreading news articles or ideas. Because anyone who follows you can reply to you with an @your-user-name, every tweet has the potential to turn into a thread of responses.

Yesterday, I ReTweeted a Discovery article with the added comment that it looked sparkly. A fast-paced bout of hilarity ensued.

Ya'll. I am exhausted. I'm working 50+ hour work weeks, and helping staff Anime Conji coming up here shortly. This weekend we had a staff meeting and did inventory on some supplies provided by the Conjecture convention staff. I should never have to make a list of the contents of a box that includes: 5 plastic rats, 15 bouncy ball eyeballs, 1 package of spam, 4 jello molds, 4 bags confetti, 1 rubber heart, 4 rope lights, 1 unused starbucks cup(grande), 2 markers, 19 washers, and a shitload of binder clips. O_o I will be staffing for both the Artist Alley and the Art Show, and I'll be a lead panelist for a Shoujo panel and a Japanese Mythology panel (I expect to be sharing the rough draft outline & power point for the panels Friends-Only on LJ on sometime this week.)

Stress aside, I am excited about it.

There's a new convention coming to San Diego, California. San Diego's first EVER anime convention.

Anime Conji
April 9-11th 2010

The Artist Alley is filled up, but our Art Show/Auction is in desperate need of participants. The rate has been lowered to $15 per panel. The art in the art show would go through the standard convention silent auction. We are especially interested in getting local artists that could also attend the convention, but if you want to do a mail-in from out of town that can be accommodated (we would return the unsold art and/or your profits in a SASE after the con). We are looking for any good (preferably anime/manga style/subject) artists that would be interested.

If you are interested, please email Glenn at:
For more details and the application.

Guys, I really need you to spread the word about this in your own journals, to your art friends, everybody. Please! m(___)m

- Bart, Young Justice: Special #1

You guys know that I absolutely adore Young Justice and (more specifically) Impulse, right? It was the most fun DC Comics has had with a series in ages.

So when a DA friend, Aeolus06 shared a link this morning, I was overjoyed.

Young Justice League Animated Series on the Horizon? [Newsarama.com]

Apparently, a voice actress leaked a part she was recording for a new DC animated series in the works on her personal blog. The entry has since been taken down. :D Stephanie Lemelin blogged that she’s voicing Arrowette in an upcoming "Saturday morning cartoon" called Young Justice League. Oh yeah, she also posted an image of the character (seen at the Newsarama link) that she claimed was concept art for the series.

In a less-certain-sounding unidentified source, the starting cast has been listed as:
- Arrowette
- Impulse
- Superboy/Kon-El
- Nightwing
- Martian Girl
- Aqualad

Now, those last two were certainly never members of the team in the YJ comic (due to being a different generation set), and I hold onto the hope that some sort of name/TV licensing issue has them calling Tim!Robin Nightwing for this series. Which would give the Robin/Superboy/Impulse original founders of Young Justice thing. Anita Fite/Empress (Isn't her name just awesome? I-need-a-fight. XD) came into the comic later, so 'm not too worried about her inclusion yet. I just worry that the bat-family YJL member may not be Tim, and I see no Wonder Girl/Cassie Sandsmark or Secret listed there.

To get a feel for the original comic series, I have a bunch of quotes from the Impulse and Young Justice comics posted here.

I know this could turn out horrible, but I'm excited anyways.

Help Haiti

Jan. 14th, 2010 10:25 pm
elfgrove: (art)
Hey guys, I was tipped off earlier today about an LJ fandom community effort to help out the people in Haiti. There are a large number of artists, writers, and crafters from various fandoms that are participating.

As quoted from its profile, [livejournal.com profile] help_haiti "was created in the morning of January 13, 2010, as a place for fandomers to help raise money to help in the rescues, recoveries and rebuilding of Haiti following the tragic earthquake on January 12, 2010."

Here's how it works:
- Go through the posts where people have offered their skills at creating fics, art, vids, podcasts, foods, toys, jewelry, clothing and more - just follow the links from the list in the sidebar.
- When you see an item you're interested in, reply to that comment with the amount you will donate if you are the winning bidder. You can bid up until noon (Eastern Standard Time) on January 20, 2010; new items can be added until 6:00 AM (EST) on January 20, 2010.
- If you win, you will be notified on January 20 or 21 by a reply to your comment from (a) one of the [livejournal.com profile] help_haiti mods or maintainers, or (b) the Offeror. Once you've been notified that you've won, you can make a donation to one of the listed charities (the list is still growing).
- The winning bidder will donate to the charity directly; please do not send any money to the Offeror or the comm's mods/maintainers.
- The confirmation process is still under development, but instructions on how to redact/block out your full name from a confirming receipt will be up by January 19.

[livejournal.com profile] theslayers is keeping a list of participating community creative sorts.

People I know that are participating:

I just finished coloring so much secret Santa art in the last couple of days, it's crazy. And my hands aren't killing me yet. A little ache~y, but not bad yet. Small miracles.

All of my Secret Santas for the 3 I participated in have now delivered, and I love my gifts.

Downside of being an artist doing virtual Secret Santas, there is no secret once you start posting. I'm surprised that some people recognize my stuff, but I guess my "style" is pretty solid these days.

So now to share my secret santa stuff (received and given) here.

I'd say not to look if you think you had me, but I'm pretty sure you two have already figured me out correctly. (Besides, the reveal is tomorrow.)

I did a simple 'pick your favorite" using DA polls earlier today, and some of the commentary has been really fun, so I thought I'd bring it over here to LJ. (Public Post, so strangers are welcome.)

I picked the "princesses" based on the following rule set.
- Disney Animated feature film. (Not DreamWorks, Pixar, Paramount, etc)
- Only counting the first film (not sequels).
- Must be female
- Must be either the lead female, female in a main character boy-girl team (and primary love interest where applicable), AND/OR actual royalty by the end of movie.

Then I also have done some splitting into subgroups to choose from just to get some interesting thinking going.
Feel free to discuss your votes, reasoning, opinion, and the general results below.

Where a question mentions a category, answer your favorite in regards to that aspect of the character. Think about how that consideration changes (or doesn't change) your answer.

Runaways v3 #11
Looking interesting again with this new arc and creative team. Klara/Rose annoys the hell outta me, but at least the issue wasn't creepily Nico-centric again. It's a team book. Balance writers. Balance. You're starting to get it.
Downside? If this 4-issue arc ends with Chase, Old Lace, AND Gert dead, I'm done. (Given, Gert's been dead a while.) They're the characters I read Runaways for. I am/was warming up to Victor, but the-team's-emotional-punching-bag is not a fun character long term.
Not sure I care for the art.

Superman #689
Was there a point to this issue?
Recap of current events and Mon-El does a non-compelling world tour for no apparent reason. Even the aside with Steel didn't really accomplish anything new. set-up for next issue, sure, but nothing really happened. I could've skipped this issue and never noticed.
Some of the two page spreads were done such that I wasn't sure what order I was supposed to be reading the panels in. Not good.

Teen Titans #72
Open on an unidentified TT funeral.
Scene change. YESTERDAY.
Angst Cassie angst.
Prance the female cast about in skimpy clothing.
Newer team members go to the fair while Cassie does TT work.
Make Blue Beetle look like a socially awkward idiot. Jamie is a smart kid fer chrissakes.
Beat that by having EVERYONE ostracize Kit --who doesn't even get plain clothes and they stop drawing him into the scenes after establishing that he's there ~somewhere.
Cassie meet trap. Violence. Blood.

I'm ready for the Young Justice '09 reunion, like NOW.
DC has promised a stable team and to start character-building again come #75. This is the closest we've gotten to a character rather than gore driven issue in ages, and they still had to beat Cassie to a bloody pulp. They've hinted the stability will be a result of returning old team members. I'm hanging in for the promise of a return to a non-gory Teen Titans.

Co-Feature: Ravager
Rose has a bad drug trip. Hallucinates Cassie. Her powers are shorting out, and she gets lost in the snow. With her, I expect the violence with minimal reason or story. It's part of her character.
elfgrove: (uncomfortable)
Hey guys.
I've got an absurd number of folk on my friends list, many of whom I realize... "I haz no clue who ya'll are!"
I just get so far behind trying to keep up with LJ. I'm already quiet on here, but it gets worse and I miss important things when I get overwhelmed with entries. TT_TT
Besides, I think there's quite a few dead accounts in there too. Meep.
We'll also take this as a chance for some of these people who friended (oh internetz, you make new verbs --just for me♥) me and never commented on my "Friends Only" to introduce themselves.

So.... It's friends list clean-up tiemz.
Geeze... I don't think I've ever done this before.

Friends List Cut

If I know you in the real lifez, you don't need to worry really. I'll LJ-stalk you guys as long as you let me. But if you have multiple accounts I ought to be following, let me know.

So, if you want to stay-on/be-added-to my LJ friends list, just shoot me a comment here. You don't have to do some big long why or anything. Just say something or other and let me know either how you found me, or how I know you.

On a side note, if you're just here for ze arts and ze writing, but don't want to hear about my personal life or comic-book geekery... You will be able to get all future artz and ficz over at [livejournal.com profile] elfgrove_studio. No personal blah blah blah there. Just the stuff you really care about. ^_~ (In fact, expect an art dump there in the next day or two. I scanned 15 or so pages of drawings last night that I have had zero time to color lately. So it's just inked line art, nothing fancy.)
It's a community. Membership is open. But only I get posting access. ^_^ You don't have to be a member to comment (And I fixed the issue with it screening comments. I think.)

EDIT: This will remain up/unlocked for a week before (and I'll post reminders) before I do the cut.
