Continued posting of that story. ^_^ It gets a little better after this. At least I think so. Short chapter.

Chapter III
Getting Home

In my car, I turned the radio to full blast. I wanted to avoid the inevitable conversation that I knew was on the tips of everyone's tongues. Luckily, between the music and their own dumbstruck thoughts, no one said a word. I have to admit, I was thankful for my luck as I pulled up the driveway to Sharon's house.

Once Sharon was inside, and I safely putting my way down the road, Adam cleared his throat and spoke, "Do you guys think another country is going to war with us, and those things are some kind of super-strong secret weapon or something?"

I couldn't answer him. I know what's happening. Sort of. Well not really. But I'm pretty sure he's wrong. Elves wouldn't work for the government, right?

"Sure Adam," Krysta responded with her trademark sarcasm. "And I'm sure that our high school is such a highly valuable strategic point that they'd risk blowing the big secret just to take it out."

And there's that too.

"Except for the big military base in town," Adam argued. "Practically everyone's parents work there, they could take us all hostage and get control of the base as ransom to our parents."

"Okay, so what then," Krysta said. "My parents don't work on base, neither do yours or Kody's. We're useless, so we aren't targets. Just your ditzy girlfriend her buddies, and bunch of other kids who tend to be either idiots or assholes, and they won't get hurt 'cause they'd be too valuable as hostages anyways."

"I guess..." Adam muttered unsurely.

Despite her outward callousness, Krysta was just trying to keep Adam calm, and the best way she did that was by being a rude smart-ass. Krysta's just that way.

I pulled into Adam's driveway, and waited for him to get his bag out of the trunk. He slammed the trunk shut and came around to lean in Krysta's open window. "You really think it's not that?"

"Don't worry Adam," I said in my most consoling voice. "This'll all get straightened out, and it'll be no big deal." Wouldn't it be nice if I could believe that too?

I pulled out of Adam's driveway and continued down the road. I hadn't gotten far when Krysta spoke up, "We're going to your house now, right? You are gonna tell me what's going on?"

I didn't respond, but I took the turn off to my house instead of hers.

---

We got there and went in my house. It was nothing compared to the glamorous mansions that some of my classmates lived in, but the two story white plantation-style house wasn't inexpensive either. Dad had a pretty high spot in international relations for the computer company he worked for, but it meant he was never really home. Lesley and I had pretty much raised ourselves, and it was an awfully big place to be alone in now that Lesley was away at college all the time.

Right about now, I was really appreciating Krysta being there as I locked the door behind us. After the earlier events, being alone in that big place was not a pleasant concept. We sat down on the giant, extremely soft couch in the living room, and just stared at the blank television screen without saying anything.

Krysta is a good five or so inches taller than me, and a bit heavier set. Her waist-length hair is still its natural medium brown color, with the exception of two long streaks she has dyed red on either side of her face. Her bright green eyes and medium skin tone were more suited for red hair anyways.

After a long silence, Krysta finally asked, "So what exactly happened today?"

"I'm," I stopped, sighed, closed my eyes, and started again. "I'm not sure how to begin."

"You were in Chemistry Lab, right?" She smiled. "What happened from there?"

It was quite a while later when I had finished the story, and answered Krysta's questions about every last detail involved. Well, with the exception of the fact I found Thgin to be rather attractive.

"Damn," Krysta breathed out harshly. "That's something else. So he's coming here this afternoon. How do you suppose he'll find here?"

"I dunno," I said suddenly realizing I hadn't given him directions or anything. "I didn't even think about it."

"Mmm..." Krysta looked thoughtful. "If he was using magic to operate that thing, I guess he can cast some sort of locator spell. Even I can manage one to pinpoint a person if I have something of theirs. I'd bet he could locate you just by focusing on your energy pattern. He can probably do a lot of shit that we can't."

"Yeah," I looked wistfully out the big window behind the couch. "Probably." It's not fair. The sun's shining, birds are singing, everything's going about just like normal. Why is only my world going completely insane? Completely not fair.

"What time is it?" Krysta's voice broke into my momentary brooding.

"Err..." I looked around and saw the VCR clock was actually still set, Lesley and Dad normally managed to reset it to midnight anytime one of them had the remote. Well, there's one good thing at least, don't have to fix that. Those two are such klutzes about actually working electronics. They're both real klutzes about actually working electronics. "11:56am." Damn, we really got out early.

"Mind if I stick around?" she asked cautiously.

"Uh... Sure," I said uncertainly. Krysta normally just does what she pleases; she doesn't ask if it's okay. "Want some lunch or something?"

"Sure," she said in a relaxed tone, sounding more like the confident and laidback Krysta I knew. "What're the options?"

I wandered into the kitchen and yelled back some food options while Krysta flipped through channels on the television. In the end, I stuck a frozen pizza in the stove and Krysta and I watched some corny sitcom while it cooked.

---

After we ate lunch, we continued watching television in relative silence as the hours passed. 1:00... 2:00... 3:00... 4:00... 5:00...

At 6:00 Krysta stood up with a heavy sigh. "I don't think that guy's showing."

I looked dejectedly up at her from my corner of the couch, with both arms wrapped around my knees. "I kinda fi-fig-figured that a couple of hours ago," I mumbled. What an idiot I must look like. He probably couldn't find me, not like he knew where I lived or anything. Of course, I'm assuming he was really going to come. Why would he want to see me again anyways?

"Yeah." Krysta looked out the window disappointedly. "So, can I get a ride home?"

"Eh?" I jumped from my own thoughts, not quite hearing her at first. "Yeah. Of course."

---

I drove her home in complete silence. Neither of us really had anything to say I guess.
