I wanted to see if anyone knew this a while back, but no one did. More's the pity, it's interesting if you think about it. It's supposed to be about growing old and mortality.

Elli's Song
From : "The Last Unicorn" by Peter S. Beagle (And yes, it was cut from the movie.)

What is plucked will grow again,
What is slain lives on,
What is stolen will remain --
What is gone is gone.

What is sea born dies on land,
Soft is trod upon.
What is given burns the hand --
What is gone is gone.

Here is there, and high is low;
All may be undone.
What is true, no two men know --
What is gone is gone.

Who has choices need not choose.
We must, who have none.
We can love but what we lose --
What is gone is gone.

The day before yesterday, at a Lord of the Rings convention, I met Peter S. Beagle and spent a few hours in his company. It was an amazing experience. Ever since, I've had this song stuck in my mind - I was thirteen when I began reading his work, and I distinctly remember singing my version of this during an awards ceremony and having my best friend tell me to shut up. However, all I could remember of it was fragmented verse and the melody I felt best, so I did a yahoo search and, after a few misses, found the complete version here - I love how it's scattered, verse by verse, across The Last Unicorn, but rhe middle verses are rather hard to find because most people deal with only the first and last.

Thank you. May I friend you?
